Stay Connected as District 9 Moves Forward with Foy!

meet yamika

Hello Birmingham! I'm Yamika Foy, District 9's newly elected Birmingham City School Board Member.

I am a proud product of Birmingham City Schools, having attended McCaw Elementary School, Daniel Payne Middle School, and a graduate of P.D. Jackson-Olin High School in 2002—Go Mustangs!

I hold a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and a Master of Public Administration from Troy University. Currently, I am pursuing a Ph.D. in Public Policy, with my dissertation focused on “The Role of Self-Efficacy in Adolescent Mothers Achieving Undergraduate Degrees.” I am also a graduate of the City of Birmingham’s Academy of Civic Engagement and earned a certificate from the Culverhouse School of Business at the University of Alabama.

My commitment to community service began in 2004 as a Literacy Specialist with Birmingham READS AmeriCorps. Over the past two decades, I have volunteered with numerous organizations, including Girls Inc., the Salvation Army, Habitat for Humanity, Save Our Youth, Grace House Ministries, and Kids and Kin, among others.

Currently, I serve as the Property Manager of the Collegeville Community with the Housing Authority of the Birmingham District. In this role, I supported several initiatives, including Conversations Over Pizza and Everyday Counts, which are among my favorites. These programs focus on reducing absenteeism by fostering strong partnerships with local principals and parents.

With a proven track record of leadership, strong technical expertise, and an unwavering commitment to student success, I bring the experience and vision needed to create meaningful change and ensure every decision is grounded in what's best for our students-- because their growth and future matter most.

Outreach- Outreach is highly salient to children’s academic achievement because it bridges the gap between schools, families, and communities—creating a support system that nurtures a child's educational journey. Outreach helps schools and community organizations build trust with families.  It encourages students to discover their interests and goals, and it goes beyond the walls of the conventional classroom setting.   When schools partner with local organizations (faith-based groups, nonprofits, health services), they expand the support network around the child.  When families and communities are connected to schools, children thrive academically and socially.

Youth- Youth should be at the center of all decision-making because they are the primary stakeholders.  Every policy, curriculum, or budget decision impacts them.  Students are more invested when they see that their experiences matter.  Listening to youth perspectives can lead to creative solutions and modern approaches to education that better reflect the needs of today's learners.
